Interested in joining Student Council?

Classroom elections are held every August at the beginning of the school year in each 4th and 5th grade classroom.  Starting August 2008, students interested must let their teachers know, in writing, their desire to be part of student council by composing an essay as to what makes them a good student council member.  Students must also have received no 3’s on their previous year’s report card and have no grade lower than a B.  Next, students will prepare and present a speech to the class. Good luck to all interested this year!

vMembership

The Student Council is comprised of fourth and fifth grade students who have been selected by their classmates.  Once each classroom has selected their representative, a school election is held. Fourth grade students may run for the office of Secretary or Treasurer, and fifth grade students may run for President or Vice President.  Those who are elected as student council members are looked upon as role models. They are expected to adhere to the Life Long Guidelines and Life Skills, infused throughout our curriculum, at all times.

v      Meetings
Meetings are generally held once a month on Mondays after school from 2:00-3:00.  Sometimes we have “special event” meetings in which we meet more than once a month.  A signed parental permission slip is required to attend the student council meetings.  Each meeting requires a new permission slip signed by a parent. Officers are required to come to the meeting at 1:45 to meet with the advisor regarding the agenda for each meeting.
v      Projects
At Country Isles Elementary School giving back to the community is an important part of our education.  Student Council sets the bar for excellence as they assist with school wide events, charity fundraising, and giving back to the community.  Every October, Student Council works hard organizing and promoting the National RED Ribbon Week activities.  In November we work hand-in-hand with the PTA on a school-wide food drive to create Thanksgiving Day cards for local people in our community.  When the holidays approach in December, Student Council members sing Holiday tunes at the Country Isles Publix. In January, Student Council participates in the Pasta for Pennies Coin Drive. Money raised during the coin drive goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Student Council is involved in MANY other activities as well!
v      Communication
We are all very proud of the high level of communication that exists at Country Isles Elementary School.  We have a strong PTA in which parents and teachers come together to set goals for our school.  Our school SAC committee works hard to oversee the many educational facets of our great school.  And our Student Council is the place for students to take part in this communication.
v      3 Strikes- You’re Out!
Beginning August 2008, Student Council members have a “three strikes and you're out policy”.  This policy ensures that members follow the life-long guidelines and life skills throughout the school. This includes the completion of classwork and homework assignments, conduct in the classroom, specials, playground, and cafeteria, as well as regular attendance at our meetings and special functions.  If an “offense” occurs, the member receives an X on their student council progress sheet.  Teachers, administrators, and other staff members who witness inappropriate activity may report the incident to Mrs. Gomez, resulting in an X on the members progress sheet. Upon receipt of three X’s the member will be asked to leave student council and is to be replaced with a newly elected member from their class.
v      Student Council Accomplishments

At Country Isles Elementary School giving back to the community is an important part of our education. Student Council sets the bar for excellence as we assist with school wide events, charity fundraising, and community involvement. Our purpose is to facilitate good relationships between our students, staff, and our community. We are proud to encourage character skills with an emphasis on citizenship, and we provide an outlet for students to share in the democratic process through our classroom and school wide elections in September.

This year we worked hard organizing and promoting the National Red Ribbon Week activities in October, we raised $1,300 for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

In November, we assisted PTA in a school-wide food drive to create Thanksgiving Day cards for local people in our community, and we sold leaves for donations as part of the Harvest Food Drive.

Also in November, we Led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Weston City Commission Meeting. It took place at the new CIty Hall.

We took part in a Holiday Festival at Publix (a Partner in Education) in December and we sang holiday songs.

Our Student Council ran a coin drive in January, “Pasta for Pennies” to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We had set a goal of $1,000 and raised over $3,000. We’ve never seen so many coins! We are so proud of our Country Isles’ Herons!

For Valentine’s Day in February, we sold roses. And they sold out fast. We raised over $1,000 for a special family in our community.

FCAT kept us busy in March. We celebrated the end of FCAT with HATS OFF TO FCAT hat day! Almost every student came to school wearing a hat.

In April, Student Council worked on a fundraiser for Autism Awareness Month. We sold Puzzle Pieces for $1.00 each. They are displayed in the cafeteria and the class that purchased the most will received a pizza party.
Congratulions Mrs. Gomez’s Class and Ms. O’Connor’s Class. It was a tie!

We Led the Pledge of Allegiance once again at the Weston City Commission Meeting on May 5, 2008. It took place at the new City Hall.

During the month of May, Student Council reminds all of our CIE students not only about Teacher Appreciation Week, but also how thankful we are about so many others. There are many people that make our school year a successful one. We need to remember where we start each morning, the bus drivers, car loop helpers, and crossing guards. Our day continues with teachers, assistants, volunteers, cafeteria staff, office staff, our school nurse and many others. It is important to let people know that you appreciate what they do!

We have been busy this year and our accomplishments are many!
Yes, Student Council works hard each and every month to exemplify our school’s mission, “Educating Responsible Citizens!”

v      I Led the Pledge
On Monday, November 19, 2007, our Student Council Representatives were invited to attend the Weston City Commission Meeting to take part in the "I Led the Pledge" program.  Student council officers and representatives were invited to open the council meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  Sean did a great job speaking on behalf of our school! They did a fantastic job representing our school and had an enjoyable time seeing our local government in action. The representatives each received a T-Shirt and desk flags set.  We look forward to doing it again in May.
